Brief Description Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital has a large funded Research and Development Program that emphasizes the development of new radiopharmaceuticals, diagnostic imaging, cancer research, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pulmonary care, kidney disease, and health services research. Investigators at the facility are developing diagnostic markers and radioisotopes that may be used for the diagnosis and management of metastatic bone cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other types of cancer. This cutting-edge radiopharmaceutical research is performed in the Biomolecular Imaging Center which houses a Micro-MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), a Micro-PET (Positron Emission Tomography), and a Micro-SPECT/CT (Single Photon Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography). Research conducted by VA investigators aims to design prostate and breast cancer radiotherapeutic treatments by using conventional chemotherapy to enhance targeted radiotherapy as a means to achieve better outcomes and fewer/decreased side effects. These projects open the door to further exploration in the design of diagnostic agents that facilitate the detection of bone metastases on a molecular level. VA research investigators work in conjunction with numerous MU departments including the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Research Nuclear Reactor. VA researchers within the Endocrinology and Cardiovascular Disease Divisions are studying several areas of clinical importance to the veteran population. These include identifying markers for cardiovascular disease, evaluation of new drugs and devices to treat cardiovascular disease. Other investigators are focused on assessing and treating diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome, and kidney disease. Members of this team include staff physicians, research scientists and members of the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, nationally recognized for multidisciplinary research programs. Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) is a growing priority for the Truman VA. Investigators are focusing on nursing research initiatives, management of chronic disease, the use of computer technology to improve patient care outcomes. These studies assess delivery of health care via telemedicine to include assessments of home health care and delivery of dermatology care from remote Community Based Outpatient Clinics (VA satellite clinics).
