Brief Description |
The Boston VA Research Institute, Inc. (BVARI) supports and conducts extramural research and educational activities at the VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS). BVARI faculty are physically located in one of the three campuses in Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and Brockton. BVARI's active research program has over 275 skilled, expert certified research professionals whose therapeutic areas of interest include:
Psychology, Cardiovascular/Diabetes, Arthritis/Bone Metabolism (Osteoporosis), Respiratory Disease, Neuroscience, Hepatitis, Infectious Diseases, Ophthalmology (Retinal Implantable Prothesis), Oncology/Vaccines (Multiple Myeloma),Outcomes Research & Informatics and Wellness.
Specific areas of interest include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Behavioral Neurosciences, Women's Health, Addictions, the origins of the Persian Gulf Way illnesses, and the Neurophysiology of Mental Illness, including a recently funded Traumatic Brain Injury and Schizophrenia Research Center. BVARI conducts research on an antagonist for alcohol effects on cell adhesion that will be useful in preventing teratogenic (fetal alcohol syndrome) and cognitive effects of ethanol; development of a post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) population registry; implantable retinal prosthesis to treat blindness; bone metabolism in chronic spinal cord injury and prevention of osteoporosis; early intervention for combat related PTSD; predictors of treatment response to PTSD; war zone stress exposure; internet based interventions for wounded warriors; cognitive behavior therapy and Parkinson's disease.
A full clinical studies unit is devoted to industry supported clinical trials that especially target the above areas of interest. BVARI has access to 11,035 inpatients and 599,886 outpatients annually and an electronic medical record system that allows immediate access to important data as well as the conduct of important retrospective research projects.
