Brief Description The types of research typically conducted at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center (BVAMC) are clinical investigations of the cause, evaluation, assessment, treatment, or outcome of medical and psychiatric illnesses. The human research program at the BVAMC offers volunteer participation in numerous research studies. As of March 22, 2010 the BVAMC had 67 active human research projects that are being conducted by 37 active principal investigators, which include MD.'s, PhD's, PharmD's, RN's, and LCSW's. The categories of participants typically covered by the BVAMC Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) are adults (any age over 19 years), any race or ethnicity, any gender, and non-prisoners. The BVAMC does not conduct research with children, prisoners, pregnant women (as the focus of the study), fetuses, or neonates. Currently, there are 14 Principal Investigators who conduct animal research funded by the VA and conducted at our affiliate University where we have an MOU for oversight by the IACUC and Animal Resource Program. Additionally, there are 10 investigators involved with basic bench research at the BVAMC. The funding sources include VA (Biomedical and Clinical Research, Health Services Research and Development, Rehabilitative Research and Development and theCo-Operative Studies Program), NIH, investigator-initiated industry, and industry sponsored grants. Current palliative care research studies are focused on epidemiology of hospice eligibility in the long term care setting. In addition, the facility is a site for VA Cooperative Studies in the prevention of prostate cancer, treatment of chronic PTSD, smoking cessation for veterans with PTSD, the Homeless Initiative and Rural Health Initiatives.
